When Bill and I got back to Alaska on January 23 it was 50° F (10°C) at 10 PM in Anchorage and there was no snow between Anchorage and Palmer and parts of the Mat Su Valley. The temperatures had been above freezing for several days and created a lot of standing water and overflow on the trail to Flathorn Lake, our usual camp location. Travel on rivers and swamps was near impossible at that time and not a good idea. We decided to do the camp at our place in Chickaloon where we had 2 feet of snow on the ground and trails that run overland through the woods and not on rivers or lakes.
We had 4 great students from Anchorage, Colorado, Canada and Germany and did get one night with -10°C so they could test their sleeping bags. Bill made us some great trails to ride and push our bikes. All 4 students graduated from the camp and 3 are on the starting list for the 2015 event.
The 5 day training camp was from January 27-31 2014.
